Description
One of the earliest works by Antonio Valladares de Sotomayor is a relacion, written and published in 1766, about the Motin de Esquilache. One of the most interesting aspects of the work is how little it says about the disturbance. Instead, Valladares's text focuses on the actions of Carlos III, who is shown in the poem as a heroic and merciful father to his people. Through this poem, Valladares contributes to a public sphere (Habermas), entering the public debate about his country's past, present, and future, a debate he would continue to participate in for decades.
